Technical collaborations

The Le@rning Federation is committed to developing technical solutions, in collaboration with national and international initiatives, to meet the needs of the Australian education community.

To date, our technical collaborations include the following.

The PILIN project

As the number of digital assets in the education sector grows, there is an increasing need for global and sustainable identifier infrastructure.

The focus of the PILIN project is to build identifier management infrastructure, based on a technology called Handle, which is currently being developed by the Corporation for National Research Initiatives. The proposed work will be transferable to other communities, such as TLF, the vocational and technical education sector, and the TILIS project.

PILIN aims to take advantage of existing governance and consultative mechanisms within the ARROW environment to ensure relevant and sustainable outcomes and optimal return on investment. The project will be run in partnership with ARROW and the University of Southern Queensland, specifically through the RUBRIC project.

LORN

The Learning Object Repository Network (LORN) is a free, easy-to-use portal that allows teachers and trainers in the vocational education and training (VET) sector to access quality online resources. Developed by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework, LORN is building the capacity to share and provide online access to teaching and learning resources.

TLF is an active member of the LORN reference group.

AICTEC

The Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC) is a cross-sectoral national committee. It provides advice to all Australian ministers of education and training on the effective use of online technologies in Australian education.

TLF is actively engaged in AICTEC activities and is represented on various AICTEC committees.

FRED (E-Framework) project

The Federated Repositories for Education (FRED) project aims to support deployment of repository federations in Australian education and training communities. It will document generic service-oriented models and produce software toolkits that support development of repository federations.

TLF is one of the key stakeholders in the FRED project and we are adopting the project's open URL toolkit in our Sharing Exchange Services project.
