Background

Identifier and Appropriate Copy Service-Resolver determines which instance of a resource is most appropriate for the user in what context. This enables users to access The Le@rning Federation-distributed content independently of where the content is stored. This also enables users to send a link of the content to other users across jurisdictions.

In the chosen architecture a jurisdiction downloads quality-assured shared jurisdictional content, TLF content and metadata for content from other sources into their local repositories.

Users connect to their local system and conduct a search. The system presents the appropriate links for the user either from their local or another jurisdiction's repository, or from the third-party repository that hosts it.

Once a user chooses an item from the search, they can view or download that item from the local repository. In the absence of a local copy, the system selects the appropriate copy for the user.

This avoids bandwidth issues at the local level while ensuring access to rich quality-assured, IP-managed content.

Current status

Identifier and Appropriate Copy Service-Resolver has been endorsed by The Le@rning Federation Consultative Committee as a national service. Plans are underway to implement this nationally. The Service-Resolver is currently being used as an appropriate copy service for Scootle.
