The Le@rning Federation's collection of learning objects includes curriculum content for students in Years K–12, across a range of learning areas.

Science

Our Science learning objects are targeted to students in Years P–10. They support and enhance understanding of key scientific concepts in a range of contexts.

Learning areas include:

  • earth and beyond;
  • life and living;
  • natural and processed materials;
  • energy and change;
  • working scientifically.

Students can engage with open-ended investigative tasks, tools, activities and processes that provide 'real' science experiences and the opportunity to improve and test scientific understandings.

Mathematics and numeracy

These interactive learning objects support and enhance understanding of key mathematical concepts in Years P–9. They are grounded in current research in education and pedagogy, and they focus on topics that students and educators often find difficult to learn and teach.

Our Mathematics and numeracy objects:

  • encourage higher-order thinking and problem-solving approaches;
  • make use of a digital environment to set up learning opportunities that might normally be too complex for a standard classroom;
  • allow students to visualise and apply mathematical concepts in new ways;
  • provide opportunities for repeated use by students through randomisation of learning activities;
  • offer relevant and authentic contexts for exploration and skills application;
  • incorporate scaffolding of student learning and feedback in various multimodal formats.

Literacy

Literacy learning objects focus on enhancing the capabilities of students in Years 5–9 who are at risk of not achieving the national literacy benchmarks.

The learning objects employ rich contexts, such as interactive narrative structures and 'game play' devices to promote engagement from diverse students. The content released to date focuses on literary reception, production and critical multiliteracies.

Features include:

  • clear instructions and ongoing feedback to students about their responses;
  • ready links to a number of curriculum areas;
  • real-life social contexts;
  • a range of contexts that provide multiple opportunities for literacy progression.

Languages other than English: Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese

These learning objects are designed to help students in Years P–10 learn written Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian.

There are two sets of content: 'Cracking the code' and 'Close encounters'.

  • The 'Cracking the code' set of learning objects helps students to learn Chinese and Japanese character-based writing systems. Character-based systems can be difficult for students used to alphabet-based systems such as English. These learning objects incorporate research recently undertaken by the National Asian Languages and Studies for Australian Schools to enhance students' understanding of Chinese and Japanese writing systems through analysis and interaction rather than only memorisation.
  • The 'Close encounters' set of learning objects for Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian is based on the principles of intercultural language learning. Students communicate and interact in authentic activities that portray the sociocultural characteristics of the accompanying culture. TLF's learning objects incorporate multimedia and spoken dialogue to give students immersive learning experiences not easily generated in the classroom.

Innovation and business

Our Arts, design and technology learning objects focus on creative skills, and critical and aesthetical appreciation of artistic techniques and technologies in media, music and visual arts.

Our business and enterprise learning objects are designed for Years P–10 and focus on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurialism. They offer immersive environments in which students can enact entrepreneurial roles, and can explore and synthesise the many components of enterprise.

Australian history, geography, people and culture

Our Society and environment content includes interactive multimedia learning resources and tools that enable students in Years P–10 to learn more about life in Australia.

The learning objects support the study of Australian history, geography, environmental studies, values and cultural studies, with some focus on people in regional and rural areas. Students are invited to interrogate, analyse and synthesise information, think critically, solve problems and make decisions. The learning objects released to date focus on Australia in the world, and on shaping Australia's identity and shaping the future.
