Selection

Our primary concern when selecting items is to find material that is educationally valuable for teachers and students and that would not otherwise be easily accessible to them.

Other considerations include:

  • exposing items from catalogues and collections to larger educational audiences;
  • determining whether an item can be licensed for use by the school sector;
  • deciding whether an item is appropriate for digitisation.

Selecting items for digital resources

The following guide provides more detail about the principles behind item selection. The guide is divided into four sections: the first outlines the range of item types appropriate for digital resources, the second identifies selection criteria on the basis of educational value, the third lists selection criteria in terms of relative value, availability and appropriateness and the fourth offers useful points to have in mind when making selections.

Intellectual property considerations

We take care to ensure all digital resources have the necessary permissions for teachers and students to use them for teaching and learning. As such, intellectual property is also an important consideration when selecting items. The Le@rning Federation's permissions officer is consulted before selection to provide guidance about copyright issues.

Following selection, we ensure that the intellectual property is scrupulously managed so that, when the resource is published, we can communicate information about rights-holders and conditions of use to users.

Copyright FAQs for TLF digital resources project

The following guide outlines some of the copyright issues that are taken into account during pre-production and production of digital resources.
